Episode 6. Stone Age Spears: When Stone and Wood Became One Weapon

I picked up a straight branch from the ground.

“Not a stone this time?”

The youngest child asked.

“I still need a stone.”

I held a palm-sized stone against the end of the branch. One end came to a point. The other had been worked narrower and left blunt.

“We’re going to make them work as one.”

“You just tie them together.”

“‘Just’ is usually the part that takes the longest.”

The children laughed.

By then, we knew how to shape stone into a point and work wood into a long, straight spear. But a stone held in the hand was sharp and short. To stab prey with it, we had to put our arms within reach of teeth and hooves. A wooden spear reached farther, but its point split and dulled easily.

For a long time, we searched for a better version of one or the other: sharper stone, tougher wood. Yet no matter how sharp the stone became, it could not grow longer than an arm. No matter how straight the wood became, it could not cut like stone.

The answer was not a better material.

A companion who worked wood brought a straight shaft. I brought a stone point with a narrowed base. Another companion soaked a length of dried sinew in water. We fitted the stone into the end of the wood and bound them together.

The point flew loose on the first hard thrust. The next shaft split. After that, the binding failed under the impact. We did not throw everything away and begin the search for better materials again. We fixed the part that had slipped, split, or come loose.

A few days later, stone, wood, and sinew no longer moved like three separate objects. Shake the shaft and the point moved with it. Strike something with the point and the force traveled down the long wood into both hands.

We had begun roasting meat over the fire when a large predator appeared in the grass, drawn by the smell. It circled us, then suddenly closed the distance. Before, I would have had to take a stone in my hand and move within reach of its teeth.

This time, I gripped the rear of the shaft with both hands. When the animal lunged, I braced one foot behind me and drove the spear forward. The weight of my body traveled through the wood and gathered at the narrow stone point. It struck near the animal’s shoulder, and the predator twisted away.

The point had twisted, but it had not come free.

“Did you kill it?”

The youngest child asked.

“No. I hurt it, and it retreated. Keeping ourselves from becoming the meal mattered more than getting more meat.”

“So the stone won because it was stronger?”

“The stone was only a handspan at the very tip of the spear.”

I extended the branch toward the children.

“The stone pierced the hide. The wood carried the strength of my body to the point while keeping teeth farther away from me. The sinew held them together at the moment of impact. I couldn’t tell you which material was strongest. Remove any one of the three, and it would no longer be the spear I held.”

The true leap in hafting was not simply the addition of a handle to stone. Stone was sharp but short. Wood was long but fragile at the tip. Sinew could pierce nothing at all. Once each material took on a different task, together they produced a power none possessed alone. Civilization had begun to move beyond searching for one superior material. It was learning to create greater power by connecting different properties.

A few days later, one side of the stone point broke. We did not discard the long shaft with it. We cut away the dried binding, removed the broken point, and fitted another with a similar base. Once it was bound in place, the spear could be used again.

The change did not end with greater reach or force. When the point broke, we could replace the point. When the binding failed, we could repair the binding. Once the parts of a single object had distinct roles, we no longer had to discard the whole thing when one part failed.

Complex technology is not made from one perfect material. It becomes a system when different parts perform their own roles and the connections between them hold. Bows, carts, ships, and machines would all grow from the same question—not “What is strongest?” but “What should be connected, and where?”

What we gained that day was not a sharper stone.

It was a way to make things that fell short on their own work together.

Historical Note

Stone points dating to about 500,000 years ago from Kathu Pan 1 in South Africa have been interpreted as spear tips hafted to wooden shafts based on impact damage, modification around their bases, and experimental comparison. The wooden shafts and bindings themselves did not survive, so the joining material cannot be identified. The oldest directly preserved adhesive currently known is birch tar from Campitello in Italy, dating to about 190,000 years ago; for that reason, the scene set about 500,000 years ago does not use adhesive.
