Episode 2. Oldowan Stone Tools: When More Things Became Food

“What if you lost that stone?”

It was the same child who had echoed my words about not throwing the broken piece away.

“At first, that was a serious problem.”

“Couldn’t you just break another rock?”

“It took a very long time before ‘just make another one’ became obvious.”

The child still looked unconvinced. Today, replacing an object is ordinary. Lose a pencil and you get another. Break a phone and you can buy the same model again. But to us, a sharp piece of stone was less an object than a stroke of luck.

When I first found one, I thought I had to keep it for as long as possible. I had no way to be sure I could ever get another. Yet its edge lost its usefulness sooner than you might think. Scrape through flesh and sinew a few times and it went dull. One bad step could snap it. Drop it while moving, and it vanished among grass and dirt.

“So you kept looking for new sharp stones?”

“For a while, I spent more time hunting for lost pieces. A flake that worked well was rare.”

I picked up a stone and turned it in my hand.

“The real change began when we stopped searching for every piece we lost.”

One dry season, we found an animal that had died only recently. My stone edge was already dull and left no more than faint scratches on the hide. Other animals had caught the scent and were circling at a distance. We did not have long.

The companion in our group who was best at breaking stone gripped a heavy rock and struck along its edge. The first pieces to come off were too thick or too short. But my companion did not stop to brood over the failures. They turned the stone slightly and struck a different spot. A flake the size of my palm came free, with a long, sharp edge along one side.

They slid it toward me. The edge opened the hide and sliced through sinew quickly. While the others kept watch, we stripped away the flesh, smashed the bones with rounded stones, and scraped out the marrow. It was far faster than trying to do everything with teeth and fingernails.

After we ate, I picked up the battered stone the flakes had come from. I copied the sequence I had seen. The first flake was too thick to use. On the second attempt, I hit my finger instead of the stone. My companion shifted my hand into a better position. I turned the stone and tried again. Only on the third strike did an edge I could grip come free.

“Three tries sounds pretty good.”

The youngest child had spoken.

“If you look at that one scene, yes.”

“Did it really take longer?”

“Much longer. Old memories sometimes fold countless failures into a single scene. Some days I couldn’t find the right stone. Some days I struck at the wrong angle. Some days I ended with nothing but aching fingers.”

The girl in the school uniform, the youngest child’s older sister, tilted her head.

“Then the skill wasn’t passed on just because your companion showed you once.”

“Hands learn more slowly than eyes. I had to watch, fail, correct my grip, and try again. Many times.”

Once learned, the method proved useful in other seasons too. We scraped the skins from tough roots and pounded apart the hard parts. Things we once could not eat—or had abandoned because they took too long—now ended up in our mouths.

“Is that what you mean when you say there was more to eat?”

“Yes.”

Tools did not create food for us. They widened the range of what could become food.

The same animal, the same bone, the same root could be a different resource depending on whether we had tools. The world had not suddenly offered us more food. We had learned how to reach what we used to leave behind.

Of course, stone did not always break the way we wanted. But failure no longer meant waiting for chance to hand us a useful piece. We could pick up another stone, break it, and try again and again.

Once, while we were moving, I dropped a sharp flake into the water. It flashed beneath the current a few times, then vanished into the mud.

“You didn’t look for it?”

“Before, I would have spent a long time feeling along the bottom.”

“What did you do that time?”

“I watched for a moment, then turned away and began looking for a stone I could break.”

“Weren’t you upset?”

“Of course. Making another still took time and effort. But now, if I lost one stone, I could make another tool to do the same work.”

By then, several pairs of hands in the group knew the sequence. Some made better flakes than I did. Some still failed often. But the method no longer lived in only one person’s hands.

“So the important part wasn’t the stone. It was knowing how to make one.”

“We still needed both. The difference was that a stone could break, go dull, or be lost.”

I put down the one in my hand.

“A method could pass from one pair of hands to another.”

A stone could be lost, but the way to make one remained in many hands. From then on, a tool was no longer a lucky find. It had become a survival skill we could repeat whenever the need arose.

Historical Note

At sites in Gona, Ethiopia, dated to about 2.6–2.5 million years ago, Oldowan tools show multiple flakes removed in sequence from a single core. Finds at Nyayanga, Kenya, suggest that the Oldowan may extend back to roughly 3.0–2.6 million years ago. Evidence indicates that these tools were used to process animal tissue and bone as well as plant foods, though the species that made them has not been identified.
